All,

We received a phone call this afternoon from Mary letting us know that Donna was involved in a nasty run-in with an RV today while cycling north on Highway 1 near Big Sur. The girls had been having a spectacular weekend and were on the return trip going north when a Winnebago drifted out of the trafic lane and into the bikelane/shoulder area, sideswiping Donna. Her helmet was smashed but saved her. She has a concussion, messed up finger, road rash and is on lots of morphine and will be spending the night in the hospital in Monterey. No broken bones and her bike is intact. The RV, of course, didn't stop and had not yet been tracked down by the CHP. Bastard.
Please send her good vibes and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Thanks,
Joann

Donna called to say hi and update her compadres. First the bad news - she has a skull fracture with some inner cranial bleeding (I believe these are the words she used - she was doped on morphine and our cell connection was spotty - suffice it to say she is bleeding inside her head). She will be moved up north in the next day or two and will remain in the hospital for the next several days for observation. She also has a broken bone in her hand. Presently she is in the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (locally known as CHOMP) ICU. The good news is that she was in good, though doped, spirits and had her lady friends with her for the ordeal. She also reported getting excellent care from bystanders - including a trauma nurse among the first on the scene.

Is someone taking care of her pets? Anyone driving down to see her today?

Yes, Bonnie is taking care of Donna's pets and has her house keys to take care of any needed house related issues. Hopefully Donna will be transported to the local Walnut Creek Kaiser today or tomorrow. If we hear anything new today we will update the message board.

My best wishes to Donna, and to a speedy recovery. You had a tough year-hang in there. Hope the driver of the RV fell off a cliff.

More news from yesterday--note that the news story reports that the driver (former Miss America) is doing OK. Wonderful. That is showing the proper concern.

Former Miss America Runs Over Bicyclist
Mon Oct 13,11:00 AM ET Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A former Miss America and wife of Lt. Gov. Steve Henry struck a bicyclist with her car, killing the woman, police said.

Heather French Henry, who was Miss America 2000, told police the sun was in her eyes as she was turning at an intersection Sunday evening and struck the 43-year-old woman, who was crossing outside the crosswalk.

Witnesses told police Henry had a green light at the time. Henry and her infant daughter were not injured.

The victim later died at University of Louisville Hospital. She was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said she did not expect charges to be filed, though an investigation was continuing.

"We're very concerned about the lady," Steve Henry said in a phone interview. "We've been in touch with the physicians at the hospital. That's where our primary thoughts are. Heather is extremely concerned about the lady and obviously very upset."

More info - Donna is to be transported up North today (Monday) and will be residing (he said sarcasticly) at the Kaiser Hospital in Martinez for the next few days. Also, the doctors say her head injuries are not getting worse. This falls under 'The Hag Proves Resilient'.

Here's hoping our Web Chick's stay at Che Kaiser is short and she's back on the bike (with a new helmet) in no time.

Get well soon, Donna

Bonnie just spoke to donna who seems to be feeling much better today based on several remarks made throughout the conversation! Donna is in true form again! In any event, she is now residing at Kaiser Redwood City. She was sent there as this facility has a neurosurgeon that she needs to be under his care. She will be having her third CAT scan today and if all goes well she may be homebound as early as tomorrow! Keep your fingers crossed.....We will keep you all posted of any updates that we receive today.

Hi everyone - thanks so much for all the lovely thoughts!! I'm home now and doing much better. Upon further examination my skull wasn't fractured afterall (you all knew I was too hard headed for that!) and it appears that I don't have a broken bone in my hand. Yay! Although the hand is swollen and all sorts of lovely corpsish colors. As The Girls put it "it looks like something that was dragged out of the river". Too bad it won't stay this way 'til Halloween - it's the perfect look for that occasion.

I've got road rash all down my left side, but other than some occasional minor dizziness (no blonde jokes please) and some residual headache, I'm just fine. I should be able to ride in a few weeks. Although I can say without a doubt, that I will never, ever, as long as I shall live, ride north on Highway 1 EVER AGAIN.

Thanks again for all the support - see you all on the road again soon.

PS - the bike appears to be fine, save for a boogered up left shifter and further road rashing to the rear quick release - a few more wrecks and there won't be anything left but a nub. My borrowed backpack took some minor damage, for which I may never be forgiven. Helmet, gloves, jersey and tights are all a lost cause. Better them than more of me!

Wow, what good news! I was going to write earlier, but, I really didn't know what to say...... I know all about road rash though. It does get a lot better after a couple of weeks. Again, it's great to hear that your not broken.
