| Hi, I hope someone out there is listening, Mike Dawson was hit by a car while riding his trek at the intersection of vasco and concord,he now has a seperated clavicel. He took 3 days off work and now he's gone back to work...The time was 8:30 july 4th. the guy who hit him left the scene of the accident after stopping very briefly to make certain that Mike was still alive. Mike got his car license number as he drove away but the guy never gave him any info not even a name!!! The CHP was unavailable for reports until monday a.m. the number that Mike got, checked out with his description of the car. It is registered to a Brentwood resident. Hey guys, be careful out there. And anyone who has any thoughts on what to do next, please let us know. Most of Mikes' bike is ok...He just needs a new front fork and a new front rim & spokes. yada yada,....see ya, cynthia |

Cynthia,
Sorry to hear about the accident. I hope Mike is ok soon - tell him I said so.
The Board of the DP Club should be contacted and this driver should be prosecuted as a "hit and run" driver. By the way, Concord doesn't intersect Vasco. Was it perhaps Camino Diablo?
Keep us posted on progress and anything we can do.

Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear about Mike, and am glad to hear he's doing better and is able to return to work. Take care of him, and let him know we're all pulling for a quick recovery.
The driver should most certainly be made accountable for the accident and leaving the scene. It never fails to amaze me how little conscience people can display toward their fellow humans.

Having been run off the road by a truck yesterday, I can relate to this. Plus there are stories out of Florida about a driver who plowed into 14 cyclists, sending 10 of them to the hospital...and the radio station DJs in Ohio who are advocating harrassing and throwing items at cyclists and opening doors in their path, etc. So sorry about what happened to you, Mike, as a result of that moronic driver. Wishing you a speedy recovery! Did you report this to the Brentwood PD? (maybe Larry Keady could follow up). Was the attack (yes, attack!) at the intersection of Walnut and Concord? I wasn't far from there that morning. Keep us posted and go after that jerk!!! Joann |

Cynthia & Mike, Make sure you follow through on this with the CHP. If you don't find a sympathetic person ask to talk to a supervisor! I suspect it was at Walnut and Concord which is in CHPs area. I believe you will have to ID the driver if he says it wasn't him. Don't give up! You may also want to contact the East Bay Bicycle Coalition. ( ebbc.org) Robert Raburn is the Ex. Director (510-530-3444) Consider Small Claims Court or there are Attys. that specialize in bike accidents.
'Hope you are feeling better and get back on the bike as soon as you can. Call me if I can be of any further help.

Thanks to all for your concern. As most of you guessed it was Walnut at Concord. I am back on the trainer and will soon be back on the road. Still fighting with the CHP to do something so I can at the very least find out if this blind person even has insurance. It would be nice to get my bike fixed on his dime. The CHP has sent a letter asking the driver involved to file a report. If he does I can get the information from that report. As of today he has not. Thanks Again !! |

What about leaving the scene of the accident without providing insurance info?? The CVC says that for all intents and purposes, bikes are vehicles. So I don't see where this would be any different that hitting a car and not swapping info. No? (Where's all those lawyer/law type members when you really need them??)
Mike, I would seriously consider contacting EBBC to see if they can help you get someone over at the CHP to put down their donut long enough to help you out. Just because you're still breathing doesn't give them the right to blow you off, or tell you to say "oh well" and forget it. You'd think that in two weeks they could have done something. Grr! |

Jay & The Slug If you can believe it the CHP believes they are helping me. I was unable to reach them this week but plan to turn up the heat next week. To answer your question Jay, I was heading out Walnut towards Vasco on what was to be a 120 mile ride. (Cynthia was working so why not) I thought I had the eye contact with the driver at the Stop Sign required to feel safe and proceeded through the intersection. I was doing about 20 MPH ( It was early in the ride, I still had lots of energy)and as I crossed into the intersection he went and mowed me down as he turned left onto Walnut. I was lucky has I went over the car not under. I remember seeing his hood, some windows and the ground. I was not OK as I got up and really didnt even know where I was. I thought at first I was on the Livermore side. I could feel the bone on the top of my shoulder and thought I had dislocated it. The guy that hit me wanted to leave as fast as he could. Another person gave me a ride home but since I was making this nice guy late for his plans I did not think to get his name. I'm not sure if he even saw what happened or came along after. I was paniced, dazed, and not thinking clearly or would of made better choices. As the hit and run driver drove away I remember thinking I should get his plate. How I pulled that out of my head 6 hours later is beyond me but I'm glad I did. I'm alive and can still ride but would love to have my bike back. Those fancy TREK parts don't come cheap. See you soon ! |

Mike,
As I said in my last message;"don't give up." I spoke to a CHP Officer that comes around our firehouse who was on the day of your accident. After reading your description I can see why he didn't remember the call. I should see him again this week and will run it by him, now that I know more, and ask for his advice.
