As some of you know-to celebrate her 65th birthday, Past DP President "Aunt Patti" is cycling cross country-3796 miles in 52 days, with 9 days of 100+ riding!! (Even us riders from Flanders may not be tough enough to do this.) Periodically, I'll post an update of Aunt Patti's progress.
Her ride did not start out well--but as we like to say it is not how you start but how you finish:
1) She came down with a sinus infection the day before the tour started. Is taking antibiotics. Won't take other med as a possible side effect is dizziness. 2) There was a big triathlon happening in SF the day the tour started (Alcatraz?) so they had to take some detours through the City. 3) She hit a big pothole the first day and bent the front rim! Has a loaner and fresh wheel is supposed to catch up with her this week. 4) Only able to ride 25 miles the first day and is generally tired but in usual great spirits and not discouraged! (Thanks to Joann for gathering this information)
Tomorrow she should be hitting Sparks, NV.

Update from Aunt Patti (from 6/16)
Sat. check in , about 34 riders, 20's to 65 guess how the 65 is.
Sun.ride leader took us through San Mateo, along sky line into SF s beach, group picture, all went to***** and a basket from there, triathlon in progress,so roads we should have been taking weren't available, so wandered around Finely got into Fairfield around 3:30 , two riders got into Pacifica got to motel 7:30 took us 3 hrs to get across g. g. bridge, 22.5 miles.
I hit a hole on Hy.37 and blew out my tire and bent the rim, had to be sagged in the last 25 miles ,ordered new rim, will be sent to Truckee, using a loner wheel till then.
Mon. fairfield into Old Sac. took trail to Folsom dam, then onto Auburn-Folsom Rd. fun ride, lots of rollers.my kind of ride! One short climb 1.4 mi.
Wed Auburn to Truckee first time on I-80 , not to bad wide shoulders for first 16 mi.crossed i-80 a number of times beautiful back roads rollers .
Thurs. started climb 2.5 mil. from motel then a 5 mi. climb good down hill, then another 8.2 climb but a 16 mi. down hill.
Fri. 92 mi., 80 on I-80 sound like Indy 500 noisy and dirty need to keep head down and eyes looking for debris on road.
Sat. ride is mainly on I-80 we get off for sag stops flat, flat, flat, sand safe brush.Had a 50's car show at hotel $30,ooo to 100,000 cars
Sun. ride on I-80 along with millions of grass hoppers, snap crackel pop, no way of missing them .we are now in the: Arm Pit of America".

Long update from Aunt Patti--and just realized that her handwriting is as bad as mine. Here is her ride report for Wednesday June 18, 117 miles to Salt Lake City (after 108 the day before) True to form she is getting tougher and tougher (she must be from Flanders) as the ride goes on...
"Time change, set clock ahead 1 hr in hotel ?????? otherwise didn't make any difference. Up at 4:30AM, want to get an early start 6:15 is the earliest they will let us ride (insurance). 8 of us start a pace line averaged 20 mph for 1st 40 miles. Then after rest stop broke into smaller groups, its going to be a long day, don't want to blow up to soon. Salt flats are just that, flat, morning was nice and cool, no wind. 101 miles at 12:30, not to bad, then some lite headwind that slowed everyone down.
It's warmer (not hot) and everyone is tired, two days of long rides is taking a toll on everyone, 6 riders didn't even start, 2 had heat stroke and had to be taken to the hospital, 1 took 2 units of fluid, the other 3 units, wouldn't be riding for a few days. I feel good, a little tired, my right foot hurt more than anything (it got real hot) had a flat 12 miles from hotel. No trouble taking things apart, but had to turn bike upside down to get wheel back on. It sat me back 20 minutes. I think being tired had something to do with it. Made it in at 3pm. Total riding time 7hrs 18 minutes, not to bad considering the milage yesterday." |

by now Aunt Patti holds the miliage record for one week for any Delta Pedaler President/ ex-President.
Snippets from her last update
June 20 (Provo Utah-64 miles)...the hills come right down to the town, something I've only seen in postcards, they don't d justice to teh beauty...
June 21 (Price Utah-75 miles)...1st 36 miles headwind. the views are spectacular...up & down the canyon floor...6 mile climb with a tail wind, at the summit (7,447)...we had headwinds again-- 37mph was fast as I ould go on a 5% grade"
June 22 (Green River, Utah-66 mniles) "66 miles of pure hell. I have never been on such a rough road, plus head winds the whole way 10-15mph, and traffic was something from horror films...got in at 1pm, went to the Canyonlands Natiopnal Park to view the arches/ rock formations--reminds me of Grand Canyon & Sadona, beautiful."
June 23 (Grand Junction, CO-95 miles) "70 miles with a strong tailwind, good road, Hwy 70E wide, smooth shoulders, little traffic, rollers, some good down hills (long) Scenery is changing, not so much sand and weeds, more rock formations. Started 6:45-in 1:30.
June 24 (Montrose, CCO-69 miles) "Revenge of the wind gods, 66 of 69 miles 25-35 mph head and crosswinds. Two of riders were blown off bikes. 6 hours of riding time for 69 miles, what a difference a day makes."
June 25 (Gunnison, CO-63 miles) "What a great day for a ride--no wind! Hills first 27 miles climbing, 3 miles down, then rollers. Hwy 50 runs along one of the streams that fills the lake, it is just beautiful."
June 26 (Salida, CO-66 miles) "Beautiful brisk morning, started late 8am (someone take note of this--latest Aunt Patti ever started) temp 34 degrees. .. Rollers and lush greenery, streams, farms, fields of grain, just beautiful--elevation 7,038 in Salida, 11,312 at Momerch Pass, COntinental Divide."
June 27 (Pubelo, CO-95 miles) "Followed river...hils and rollers, scenery changed to desert again, flat 1 mile in fronmt of motel." 96.29 miles, 5 hours on bike."

OK, I am taking back the hex I placed on Aunt Patti when she dragged me to the Pasta Primavara Century during a rainstorm. I wished that she'd ride in multiple 100 degree day--now she has--and the curse is being lifted.-j
Sun June 29-Pueblo-Lamar, 125 miles...head winds 10-15 mph, lasted the whole day...drafted a tandem, that really helped, last 20 miles they were worn out, so I finished ahead.
Mon June 30-Lamar-Garden City, 107 miles...coming out of the rollers we got to feed lot, aroma, yuck, father down the road natural gas plants, another yuck...my butt hurts, my feet hurt, I'm just plain sore.
Tues July 1-Garden City-Dodge City, KS, 51 miles...light winds, small rollers...Dodge City is nothing to write home about
Wed, July 2-Dodge City-Great Bend, 87 miles...another easy ride, 5 mph tail winds...not much to see but corn fields
Thurs, July 3-Great Bend-McPherson, 64 miles...We all wore our red, white and blue shirts--at 30 miles from teh town of Lyons we regrouped and rode into twonm where we had a police escort through Main Street...some of the towns people made home cinnamon rolls and fresh juice...We then went to grain silo and were shown how the grain-wheat-barley is stored. Then back on the road for another (hot) 36 miles, it is now pushing 90 degrees, got in 11:30am 98 degrees, by 3 o'clock 106 degrees. Not going out unless I have to, expect tomorrow to be hotter.
Friday, July 4-McPherson-Abilene, KS, 64 miles. Started 6:30am nice tail wind, rollers and pretty country, lots of greenery and creeks. Got into Abilene at 10:45, to early to get into motel, so went to the Eisenhower Museum. It is now 100 degrees. Now I have lartingitis, feel good, just can't talk. Went to Eisenhower Field to watch fireworks, wanted to experience small town celebration, good show.
Sat, July 5-Abilene, Topeka, 108 miles. 6:15 start,a lready 75 degrees, and humid. Went through the nicest residential area yet, some of the older towns still have BRICK roads... in the country lots of wheat and soy bean fields...it is getting hottor by the minute. I rode by myself today, mainly beacuse I can't talk and it is painful if I did. 100 degrees when i got to motel at 2 pm, humidity 69%. Don't want to go into the pool, lots of rug ratys and they have a tendency to pee, and the hot tub has foam, so I'll skip that too. One of our riders had a dalmation come after her, knocked her off bike-#14 rider to hospital.
Sun July 6, Topeka-St Joseph, 89 miles....teamed up with some locals, we grabbed their wheel, 26 mph, great fun but we overshot our turn..we were 5 miles past, and we had to come back in 10 mph headwinds, not fun. Southwest parkway is like riding through GG Park only hilly, and homes line the roadway. A fellow rider, a big mucky muck in the city) had fruit, juice and water-we stopped in the shade to snack-then finished the ride. |
