I was riding home from work Wednesday about 6:00 pm when someone made a left turn from the opposite direction right into my path. I did an endo onto the hood, up the windshield, and onto the ground, a real 'Noggin Knocker'. I heard the driver say "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" before she drove away. Good Samaritans pursued her and got her license number. The police were notified and filed a report. They asked me if I wanted to file "Felony hit and run charges". I replied that I would like to think about it first. Any suggestions from the legal minded? Now two days later I received a phone message from the investigating Officer saying the driver turned herself in to the Police.
Cranky, now with really bad knees. |

| At the very least, I would like to see this incident become a part of her permanent driving record and reported to her insurance company. Perhaps the long term damage to you and your bike won't be evident immediately. I think her background with respect to driving should also be investigated to determine is she has had similar episodes of reckless driving. |

Since you invite the input.....you should press charges to the extent that the district attorney will prosecute. Consider this; 1) if this is her first offense NOTHING will happen except for a record of the event on her driving record to be used to help the court at a future date should she continue to drive like an ass. 2) if this is not her first offense then she has already had a freebie and should be held accountable. 3) you pressing this might just save another cyclist, or pedestrian, or driver, or passenger the impact of her irresponsible driving. And since that person might be me or someone I love I would appreciate it if you would press this.
Kindest Regards! |

I agree with everybody above. You should follow through!
I really would like to know what police department it was that asked you about filing charges and followed up with an investigation, so I can send them a dozen roses! After considering the lax response of other police agencies they deserve some recognition.
I suggest contacting Mike Dawson re. how to proceed with her insurance company, if she has one. Hope to see you back on the road soon.
