Yesterday, I rode Montezuma Hills Rd. out of Rio Vista to Birds Landing and beyond. I parked at the foot of Main St. (downtown) and rode out Montezuma Hills Rd. to Birds Landing. Then I rode Shiloh Rd. (past the old church/cemetary to where it intersected Hwy. 12), then rode down to Collinsville and back Montezuma Hills to Rio Vista. (This ride is a shorter, slightly modified version of the one Dave S. lead some months ago.) Birds Landing is a very small community with a funky little bar (worth stopping at). Collinsville is not much more than a small group of homes. Portions of this ride are also described in the Cyclists' Route Atlas, A Guide to The Delta, Farm, and Wine Country by Randall Braun.
This is a good ride to escape the traffic we have on the roads around East County, and is only a 20 min. drive to Rio Vista. The Montezuma Hills are actually rollers. The scenery is ranchland with lots of grazing sheep and huge windmills (SMUD). The pavement is very good quality. I got 47 mi. and 1350' climbed. It can be very windy out there so go on a day where the winds are light. |
