So says Mike Imren of the Daily Herald. Here's the link to his pretty worthless opinion...

http://www.dailyherald.com/search/main_story.asp?intID=38194111

I'm presuming that Mr Imren feels that, in order to be a real athlete, one must play with balls (apologies to Lance Armstrong for the play on words!) According to him, any 250# meatloaf who can take a hit in pro football would fit the criteria of "athlete". Not only that, but the athlete could then go on to train for and win the Tour de France, no sweat! (What about taking a hit...or several... from cars and surviving to win 6 tours?)

Doesn't this come up every year? I swear they write this stuff just to generate controversy. If they get a bunch of letters or e mails they can go to their editors and say, "Hey look I'm being read."

What about Tyler riding for two weeks on a broken collarbone last year? I suppose that makes him a wimp too.

(It should be noted that I did not read the article. From paipai's summary, he's being pretty insulting to cyclists and I won't give him the satisfaction of the traffic boost.)

Arghhh.... good point. I did read it. It was pretty silly. I don't deny the talent of guys who play ball games, but come on.

However, my vote for best cyclist ever still rests with Eddie. 5 Giros, 5 Tours and 1 Vuelta. Did the guy ever sleep?

I was worried that on the last day Lance would get punched in the kidneys too by some wacko.

Mr Imren really knows how to pick 'em. Today's Miami Herald sports page is reporting that Ricky Williams, Mr Imren's hero, failed a 3rd drug test. Perhaps that could be the reason why he retired? (Not because of all the devastating hits he took as a top athlete?)

With no apology whatsoever to Mary, here is a little campaign literature. To keep this thread bicycle-friendly, there's been talk of Lance Armstrong as a write-in presidential candidate.

His assumption that Williams could hang on for a couple of hours is pretty absurd. Football players are only on the field for 20 minutes, over a almost 3 hour time frame.
