I was enjoying a spin (grind?) up the mountain yesterday and came upon the following info on a bulletin board at the Junction ranger station on Mt Diablo...
1) As of 8/10/03, "bicycle benches" have been installed at the Junction as well as at the Summit. These are the result of a Boy Scout project and donations, primarily by cyclists. A great place to relax, stretch and catch one's breath. 2) There are floor pumps located at each of the ranger stations (South Gate and North Gate entrances, Junction and the summit visitor's center. 3) The average grade on South Gate Rd is 4.5%, North Gate Rd 5.75% (yes, Dave, you always said this side was tougher!), and Summit Rd 6.9% with the final 1000 ft of road at 18%. 4) They have also posted stats about cycling accidents. 70% occur on weekends BUT the majority are caused by excessive speed on the part of the cyclist in spite of the heavier auto traffic. During my Tuesday ride, I was passed by a total of 2 cars on the way up (none on the way down!)....wonderful having the mountain to myself.
