The former ride proposal will now officially be offered as a bona fide club sanctioned ride. Here are the details...Sunday, February 15, 2004. Sutter Creek to Volcano and back, either by way of Sutter Creek-Volcano Rd ...or return via Rams Horn Grade and Shake Ridge Rd...or Fiddletown Rd and Hale (AKA Hell Rd) for those who whorship more miles and climbing. (Have Jay tell you about the creek at the bottom of Hale Rd sometime!)The basic ride is 24 miles round trip with a gradual elevation gain of about 1400 feet total and only one hill of significance ("Fabio Hill"). The grandissimo ride is approximately 45 miles, 4500+ ft. Meet at the public parking area in Sutter Creek behind the firehouse/city hall at 9:00am. Bathrooms on site. Ride starts at 9:30am for the climb to Volcano. In Volcano, we will visit the Black Chasm Cavern where the club has reservations for a one hour tour at 11:00 am. Dress warmly because the road to Volcano can be very cool as it snakes along the bottom of the canyon next to Sutter Creek (the liquid type)and because the caverns are underground. (The tour is limited to 20 people and the cost is $12 per person so make your reservation ASAP by calling Joann at 925-516-7734.) After the tour, riders have the option of returning directly to Sutter Creek for lunch and/or coffee or can continue up Rams Horn for points beyond, eventually ending up in Sutter Creek again. Directions: from Stockton/Lodi, take Hwy 88 east. After Clements, Hwy 88 makes a left turn, continuing toward Jackson. Turn left (north) on Hwy 49 which drops you down into Sutter Creek. The firehouse/city hall are at the south end of town as you drive down the hill. Rain will most likely cancel the ride but NOT the cavern tour! |

An update on next week's Sutter Creek/Volcano Ride with Black Chasm Cavern Tour....
Please go to the Ride Schedule if you need to review the pertinent details. If you call me, please leave a phone # so that I can call you back! The ride will begin no later than 9:30 a.m. as we are supposed to be at the cavern 1/2 hour before the 11 a.m. tour. Plan on covering the 12 miles in an hour and that includes Fabio Hill.
Please bring CASH if you are planning to take the tour...I don't know if checks are accepted. I THINK that credit cards are OK.
There are restrooms at the Sutter Creek public parking lot.
Dress warmly! The cavern operators suggest wearing shoes with good traction. So at the very least you should either wear MTB-style bike shoes or carry a pair of tennys with you. Road-style bike shoes are NOT recommended (LOOK and similar styles). Jay Kleinwaks has agreed to shuttle extra clothing and footwear to Volcano in his car prior to the ride. If you would like to have him carry any items for you, contact him about delivering shoes/clothing to his home this coming week (This can be done after 730 pm on Wed or Thurs night).
Rain will cancel the bike ride (for all except the truly crazy) but the tour will go on. The meeting time and place would remain unchanged.
The following persons are confirmed for the ride AND tour. Please let me know if anything changes. Forgive me if you told me of your intentions to come but don't see you name...let me know ASAP! (There is room for 20 on the cavern tour.)
Joann Seaver Donna Kleinwaks Dave Stoefler Jerry Kruse Leticia McIntyre Mike Thomas Pat Dibasilio Jan McGreer Mother Mary Engelton Bonnie Flansburg Donna Williams Pam Stone Mike Desmond (?)
Jay K and Chris P are planning to do the ride only.
Looking forward to the adventure with all of you, Joann |

To clarify.
I'm driving up to the Black Chasm Cavern, near Volcano, @9:00-leaving my car at the Mine while I ride down to Sutter Creek, and then back with the gruppo at 9:30. Sooo, when we arrive at the mine I'll have everything that anyone had left at my house (this Wednesday or Thursday) in the parked car. After the mine tour you can put the cavern clothes back in my car, then I plan to do the longest ride option. Only problem is that after the ride I am going straight down to the Cantua Creek Road race--so you wouldn't get your stuff back for a few days (next Wed/Thursday).
Leaving stuff off-just drop by Wednesday or Thursday 7:45-9:15, I'll be training in the garage and there will be a big box you can drop your shoes etc off in.

"Not Just Any Ride" a good name for this. Turned out to be one of the BEST DP Rides, lots of brisk riding with Joann somehow keeping everyone together--though she decided to kill some of us by suggesting the "shortcut" over Rams Horn--20% Charleston Grade. The Cavern was fantastic, though disappointed there were no singing Pirates like in that great cavern in Anaheim.
