Team,
You know how I am involved with the whole cancer survivorship issue, right? Well, here I am again asking for your help on behalf of a friend. My buddy from Ride to Live/Cyclists Combating Cancer, Scott Martin, is is need of a second bone marrow transplant and ASAP. He fought off leukemia last year and is showing signs of having a recurrance. Some of you had the pleasure of meeting and riding with Scott on Sunday during the Tunitas Creek trip...seeing him ride, you wouldn't think that he is in jeopardy but his blood counts are faltering and he needs a compatible donor soon.
I'm told that the marrow typing test is no different from getting a blood test (as far as discomfort is concerned!) and Scott has provided me with info about having the test done at Stanford where a certain number of tests are offered free of charge each week. He is also trying to have the cost offset through the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Even if you can't help Scott, your data would be entered into a national registry and could save another life in the future.
PLEASE consider doing this and contact me if you would like more info....or, to say YES! Thank you very much. Joann 925-516-7734 |

Me again....
My friend, Scott Martin, is officially in the Stanford Bone Marrow Transplant program once again. His blood counts are very low and he ended up in the hospital in Austin, TX, during Ride for the Roses weekend and had to scratch from the bike tour, to his and everyone's great disappointment Could have been a virus floating around or possible food poisoning from all that BBQ'd stuff they fed us down there.(Yours truly was a victim, too, along with more than 20 other known cases.)After a hefty IV anti biotic*****tail, he is back home and feeling much better but in great need of a bone marrow transplant, sooner rather than later, before his leukemia comes back with a vengence.
There is a bone marrow screening drive scheduled on Scott's behalf: Wednesday, November 12 from 11 am to 3 pm at the Fox Plaza Bldg, 1390 Market St, Suite 105, San Francisco. The fees will be covered by the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Please call 415-625-1129 for more information .....and to make an appointment!!!There is no obligation to donate marrow in the event of a match with Scott or anyone else....but what a wonderful gift it would be to save someone's life, eh?
Sincere thanks, Joann |

Hi Joann
I called the phone number you provided and it goes into a voicemail....I left all of my phone numbers and hope to hear back from them asap. I am leaning towards a 2pm appointment so that I can work 1/2 a day.

Jojo,
I'm interested in helping but Wednesday is a bad day for me. Is it possible to have a blood test done locally and the results sent to Stanford?

Yes,in fact Diane Hill of the Stanford bone marrow program suggested that potential donors from east CoCoCo go to the American Red Cross blood donation clinic (on Claremont Dr in Oakland?) to donate blood and be screened as a potential marrow donor. The results will then be entered into the national registry and the info will be available to all bone marrow programs. Diane mentioned that recently she has had an unusually high number of inquiries from east CCC...I like to think it is a direct result of Delta Pedaler interest!
Thanks for asking. Glad you had the opportunity to ride with Scott during the Tunitas Creek ride.
